This Fire Red haired Island Diva lives in the Turks and Caicos Islands with her hubby and two beautiful kids, decided after years of texlaxing her hair that it was finally time to take the plunge and embrace her ‘curly’. Kia sent me an email on Face Book a while ago telling me about her business and how she was doing and she just happened to mention that she did the big chop. Dumbo me hadn’t noticed the profile picture she had up for A MONTH! that all her hair was gone, I was in shock. So needless to say Kia writes…..
I am still in shock myself that I just cut it all off. Even though I was hooked on the “creamy crack” my hair used to be the bomb. My natural hair texture was never very coarse, so my hair stylist always used a mild relaxer mixed with a conditioner and he never left it in long. So even though I didn’t know anything about “texlaxing” back then, I was kinda already doing it 🙂
Flash forward to now (speaking of ‘flash’… I love that movie Flash Gordon..don’t ask me why I put this in here, but that just how my brain works sometimes), I moved to Turks and Caicos and its like my hair said “oh, hell no!” because it started to thin out to the point of looking like a scrunchy around a shoestring. A combination of the dry air, salt water and monopoly of Dominican run salons (they LOVE to blow dry) didn’t agree with my hair at all.
Then I discovered YouTube and was inspired. I tried transitioning with bantu knots and braids. The bantu knots were cute, especially when i frizzed it out, but didn’t agree with my relaxed ends. The braids were cute as well but I honestly cant take braids, weave, wigs..anything that prevents me from getting a GOOD scratch, ya kno. 2 weeks MAX and I’m ready to snatch it out! I grew frustrated seeing my waves in the front and these lifeless ends. Plus, the two textures grew more difficult to handle.
Here comes Sept, I had single braids in at the time and one day just decided to snip 5 or 6 braids off in the back. “Who tell meh fah do dat” girrrrl, that ignited a flame. Once I saw those coils in the back the next day I took the braids out and did my big chop that weekend.
My husband is so used to me having long hair, so when he saw it he was like “you bored, huh?”lol. He doesn’t like short hair unless its straight short hair, like Nia long or Halle berry, which I would have to get a relaxer again to achieve making that journey pointless. My little girl was like “now, you look like me, mommy!” I don’t LOVE the short hair, but I OWN it, ya know. I LOVE BEING NATURAL and I wouldn’t go back for anything.
Because my hair is still short, I do wash n go’s pretty much everyday if I am not wearing a cute hat. I think Ive shampooed my hair maybe 3 times since my bc. I co-wash with tresemme extra rich moisture conditioner, Herbal Essence Hello Hydration…anything that smells really good but at the same time adds extra moisture. I’m 2secs from checking into a clinic b/c i am a serious product junkie.
Love that you are doing a blog. hopefully I can go there for tips, tricks and a good laugh. any way i can connect with you more I am all for it! This is WAY longer that I planned…boy, I can chat about hair. lol. Love you..Muah!
Thanks to you for being one of my inspirations
Kia’s Regimen
Another product Junky… *SMH*! its all good though girl…we family I will never turn my back on you! lol so even though Kia outlines her regimen here, it may change over time as her addiction develops and she discovers new products that works for her hair. (smile)
For now this is what she describes as her regimen:
-Take daily vitamins (I’m honestly not consistent…I just can’t remember to grab these things in the morning)
.
-Every night I leave a conditioner (Bomba) in my hair with a plastic cap then put a satin scarf over that
-Wash it out in the morning with a rinse conditioner, usually Tresemme Extra Rich Moisture Conditioner.
-Sometimes use an eyedropper to apply scalp treatment.
-Apply a moisture cream or hair butter
-Seal with Moroccan oil
-Touch of IC Fantasia Olive Oil Gel.
-Out the door and let air dry
