I said I was done with the Celeb posts, I lied…I was reading US Mag online, and your girl Viola said she is done playing ‘maid’. I thought, well that’s interesting……was that before or after you accepted the role and the academy award nomination?
US MAG ONLINE
Viola Davis has been there, done that. The actress, who earned an Academy Award nomination for her role as a Southern maid in 2011’s The Help, says she has no intention of playing a domestic worker ever again. In her latest film, Beautiful Creatures, Davis plays a librarian named Amma. The character is a hybrid of two characters, a maid and librarian, who first appeared in the popular book series by authors Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl “I’m tired of that,” Davis, 47, tells CNN of playing a housekeeper. “Me and Octavia [Spencer], Aunjanue Ellis, Roslyn Ruff — we all played maids in The Help and it was fabulous. It’s a fabulous story because we were personalized and all of those things, but I think that people need to see an African American in the 21st century integrated in the life of this town and family who’s not in servitude.” Read more
I think the last part of her statement is what she wants to emphasize and what she is really tired of is – African american women playing roles that are ‘low class’ ‘slave related’ ‘servitude’ (as she mentioned) just lower than they are worth.
1. You don’t have to accept the role or the award Like always, there is that small thing we call ‘choice’ ! Its hard for me to understand a person who makes an independent choice and then in the same breath not show full support of that choice after the repercussions (especially if the choice was a great one) have been realized. If we make a bad choice then the ‘lessons learned’ becomes what is most important about the choice. So in a sense as a black actress if you have chosen to accept roles that focus on that part of our history where we were considered ‘low class’ only fit for servitude ect. then I am not sure it is very fair to say you are tired of making that choice (especially if you do it over and over again)
2. If not you then who? Angelina?… Nicole Kidman? I doubt either one of these ladies can tell the stories of our ancestors and what they went though like we can. Only a black actress can play a slave woman… or ‘the help’ .. and that might sound harsh but that’s OUR reality, our history sucks.. our stories are hard but nobody else can play the role. Maybe we should just stop telling/writing these stories and re-living that aspect of our history — I dont know about you but I am sure happy whoopie didn’t let Julia Roberts play Celie…
3. Why is it easier for a white woman to get cast in ‘great roles’ than it is for a black woman?… is that even still relevant today?
Really I am not sure … but it might be ….Unless that directly happened to you how can you prove that? So even though you might have a strong feeling that white actresses are afforded more opportunities you have no time to dwell on that because if you feel that way you have alot more work to do. What about Hispanic women, is it easier for them, Aisians, Middle Eastern,Caribbean? the list goes on and on… The point I am trying to make is if you feel you have to work hard, then work hard.. no comparisons …no hangups just do what you need to do.
4. Things are changing, look at little miss Scandal – Kerri Washington – She did just play a salve girl in Django. But never fear, in addition to Django she has played a few other roles that has shown her range as an actress, she is not in a box by any means, why is that? – Choice  5. Black actresses have to work hard just like anybody else.. Ask Leonardo Dicaprio..poor little guy
Sometimes I think black actresses settle for mediocre roles, not necessarily Viola but take a girl like Gabriel Union, she is so type casted its not funny, I am so tired of seeing her play the hurt pretty little girlfriend with the super hot hunky boyfriend I just want to see her play a bad bitch .. a grown ass bitch…. not one with pompoms and a cheerleader outfit.. but something that is entirely opposite of what we expect, shoot something, bust some ass……. push yourself…… Kind of like what Denzel did with Training Day or that time quiet innocent Halle took all her clothes off  ( we didn’t like that did we?) but you get what I am saying……Gabby need to quit playin’ and work. 6. What about the music mogal turned fly by night actress taking all the great roles a real actress could have done… (Rihanna, Beyonce) – Now that ish…That is a real problem that I am not sure will ever get solved.
Those are my thoughts I love Viola but I wasn’t too keen on her comments even though I understand where she is coming from, I think we are the masters of our own destiny and as an actress playing the part of servitude doesn’t stop the progression of black women today. Its just a story… I know I aint no damn slave…. (so kidding lol)
